Well this is exciting! However on the other hand, I can't say I'm a bit concerned. Why? Well, you know the drill; classic student's dilemma about choosing a course which they "actually" like and end up hating the subject due to the transformation of joy to homework, spare time to study time and etc. But it is unlikely that I will hate the subject, as most of it is a part of my life now; how can you make a guy hate his computer if he follows news and updates from his Twitter and Google Reader account, or making his shopping from his computer, keeps in touch with his 10.000km away friends and family? Now this is exactly what Pew Internet and American life project tell us about the trends in social media use, me being one of the "Millenials" I tend to use the full potential of the provided vast space of digital information.
Chapter II: HELP! My mom is on Facebook!
According to the report, Boomer generation has realized the importance of online existence, increasing the social network website usage by 300% and making them stay connected with their old fellow friends which would be long forgotten if it wasn't for the Facebook. Well, obviously it creates awkward situations, especially for children receiving friend requests from their moms and dad. The fact that I'm OK with this arrangement doesn't make it sufferable for other kids, however this is my blog so, suck it up people, it may be only way your mothers can interact with you as our generation started to see profile pictures instead of actual faces of people!
Chapter III: Honey! Have you seen the newspaper....oh nevermind!
I am so used to waking up to the buzzer of my iPhone, posting updates from msnbc.com. I get my coffee which my roommate makes before going to work, and instantly go back to my bed, reading news from my iPhone screen, well who needs 23" LCD monitors anyway!
A week ago, a girl e-mailed me from France, saying that she wants to be our roommate. Imagine they have Toronto Star on daily basis in Paris with classifieds section. No Mr. John Lennon, it is not even easy if we've tried. The thing is, thanks to Craigslist and a video we made introducing the house and the room, she came to Toronto on Friday and moved in on Saturday. Now my limited mind actually has problems with comparing the old way of doing these things, same with difficulty in comprehending how people would randezvous before the age of mobile phones. Joke aside, incremental use of online classifieds keep us one step ahead of the retail stores providing us with a price and time edge in trading environment.
Chapter IV: All your base are belong to us!
Another important trend in the report was the online gaming statistics amongst the teens, which has the highest percentage of 78% compared to other uses of internet. My example about targeting a market and one of my favorite social media campaign would be combined in Obama's online gaming campaign. It is not the first time a game was used for advertising, but would be the first time it was used for political purposes which shows the effectiveness of emerging trends in online world. These Obama ads were seen on many famous games such as NFL 09 or NBA 08. With successful campaign, 2008 elections have seen the highest voter turnout in 40 years.

Consequently, by using the data gathered by Pew Internet and American life project, it is easier to segment the internet user and their usage tendencies in online trends. By doing so, it gets easier to target that segment with online advertising in many areas such as online classifieds, gaming, online video, social networking or even via e-mail.
